Berlin Wall and my parents

The 9th of November is an important day for me. We, in Germany, celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of DDR and BRD to the BRD. This day is of great importance for a lot of people. Nonetheless, there are different opinions about this historic event.

I have spoken with my parents about it last week and asked them the same question: what is your opinion about the 9th of November?

For my father, freedom is a human need and the fall of the Berlin Wall is the manifestation of it. The time when it happened, he could not believe it. He thought it would be some hoax. At the end, he celebrated the event. For him, the Reunification is a big event in the history of Germany and something that should be remembered.

My mother is rather critical towards this. When she saw it on TV, she could not believe it. She thought it was a joke by a Comedy Show. For her, the situation was nearly surreal. To see people storming through an area which was heavily guarded normally.

The end of the Cold War and the problems of Reunification shaped her opinion about this topic. On one side, there was less and lesser fear of a nuclear war, but on the other side, she was concerned about the problems: to reunify a country you have to change the minds of the people and not simply change the border.

On every historic event you have several opinions and different perspectives. What is your opinion on this? Has the fall of the Berlin Wall affected your country?
